Description

Clavamox® Chewable Tablets (amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium tablets) are a prescription veterinary antimicrobial for oral use in dogs and cats. The formulation combines amoxicillin, a penicillin-class antibiotic, with clavulanate potassium, a beta-lactamase inhibitor.

Clavamox Chewable Tablets are prescribed by veterinarians for specific bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. Labeled indications include certain skin and soft tissue infections in dogs and cats, periodontal infections in dogs, and urinary tract infections in cats.

The palatable chewable formulation provides an oral administration option for veterinarian-directed therapy.

How It Works

Clavamox® combines amoxicillin with clavulanate potassium. Amoxicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis in susceptible organisms. Clavulanic acid inhibits certain beta-lactamase enzymes, extending the antimicrobial spectrum of amoxicillin to include susceptible beta-lactamase-producing organisms.

Indications

Dogs:

Clavamox® Chewable Tablets are indicated for certain skin and soft tissue infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:

• Wounds
• Abscesses
• Cellulitis
• Superficial/juvenile pyoderma
• Deep pyoderma

Clavamox® Chewable Tablets are also indicated for periodontal infections due to susceptible aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.

Cats:

Clavamox® Chewable Tablets are indicated for certain skin and soft tissue infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:

• Wounds
• Abscesses
• Cellulitis/dermatitis

Clavamox® Chewable Tablets are also indicated for urinary tract infections (cystitis) caused by susceptible strains of E. coli.

Use only as prescribed by a licensed veterinarian.

Ingredients

Active Ingredients:

• 62.5 mg Tablet: 50 mg amoxicillin activity / 12.5 mg clavulanic acid as the potassium salt
• 125 mg Tablet: 100 mg amoxicillin activity / 25 mg clavulanic acid as the potassium salt
• 250 mg Tablet: 200 mg amoxicillin activity / 50 mg clavulanic acid as the potassium salt
• 375 mg Tablet: 300 mg amoxicillin activity / 75 mg clavulanic acid as the potassium salt

Directions

Administer orally as prescribed by your veterinarian. The prescribed dose should be provided using the appropriate combination of whole tablet strengths. Do not remove tablets from the foil strip until ready to use. If a tablet is broken, the entire tablet should be consumed.

Dogs:

The recommended dosage is 6.25 mg/lb of body weight twice daily.

Skin and soft tissue infections and periodontal infections are generally administered for 5 to 7 days or for 48 hours after signs have subsided. If no response is observed after 5 days, treatment should be discontinued and the case reevaluated by a veterinarian.

Deep pyoderma may require administration for 21 days. The maximum duration of treatment should not exceed 30 days.

Cats:

The recommended dosage is 62.5 mg twice daily.

Skin and soft tissue infections are generally administered for 5 to 7 days or for 48 hours after signs have subsided, not to exceed 30 days. If no response is observed after 3 days, treatment should be discontinued and the case reevaluated by a veterinarian.

Urinary tract infections may require administration for 10 to 14 days or longer as directed by the veterinarian. The maximum duration of treatment should not exceed 30 days.

Possible Side Effects

If an allergic reaction or other unexpected response occurs, contact your veterinarian promptly.

Precautions

Safety for use in pregnant or breeding animals has not been determined.

People with known hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins should avoid direct contact with this medication, including contact with the skin and mucous membranes.

Antibacterial medications should be used only for proven or strongly suspected bacterial infections as directed by a veterinarian.

Storage

Store in a dry, cool place at temperatures not above 77°F (25°C). Do not remove tablets from the foil strip until ready to use. Store securely out of reach of children and animals.

Disposal

Dispose of unused or expired Clavamox® Chewable Tablets through a medication take-back program when available or according to applicable local medication disposal requirements. Keep discarded medication and packaging securely inaccessible to children and animals.
