Clavamox Drops

Description

Clavamox® Drops (amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium for oral suspension), USP are a prescription veterinary antibiotic for dogs and cats. The formulation combines amoxicillin, a penicillin-class antibiotic, with clavulanate potassium, a beta-lactamase inhibitor.

Clavamox Drops are prescribed by veterinarians for specific bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. Labeled indications include certain skin and soft tissue infections in dogs and cats, periodontal infections in dogs, and urinary tract infections in cats.

The liquid formulation provides an oral administration option for veterinarian-directed dosing.

How It Works

Clavamox® combines amoxicillin with clavulanate potassium. Amoxicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis in susceptible organisms. Clavulanic acid inhibits certain beta-lactamase enzymes, extending the antibacterial spectrum of amoxicillin to include susceptible beta-lactamase-producing organisms.

Indications

Dogs:

Clavamox® Drops are indicated for certain skin and soft tissue infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:

• Wounds
• Abscesses
• Cellulitis
• Superficial/juvenile pyoderma
• Deep pyoderma

Clavamox® Drops are also indicated for periodontal infections due to susceptible strains of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.

Cats:

Clavamox® Drops are indicated for certain skin and soft tissue infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:

• Wounds
• Abscesses
• Cellulitis/dermatitis

Clavamox® Drops are also indicated for urinary tract infections (cystitis) caused by susceptible strains of E. coli.

Use only as prescribed by a licensed veterinarian.

Ingredients

Active Ingredients:

Each mL of reconstituted suspension contains:

• Amoxicillin activity: 50 mg
• Clavulanic acid: 12.5 mg as the potassium salt

Inactive Ingredients:

Directions

Administer orally as prescribed by your veterinarian.

Reconstitute the product according to the manufacturer label before administration. Shake the oral suspension well before each use.

Dogs:

The recommended dosage is 6.25 mg/lb of body weight twice daily.

Skin and soft tissue infections and periodontal infections are generally administered for 5 to 7 days or for 48 hours after signs have subsided. If no response is observed after 5 days, treatment should be discontinued and the case reevaluated by a veterinarian.

Deep pyoderma may require administration for 21 days. The maximum duration of treatment should not exceed 30 days.

Cats:

The recommended dosage is 62.5 mg twice daily.

Skin and soft tissue infections are generally administered for 5 to 7 days or for 48 hours after signs have subsided, not to exceed 30 days. If no response is observed after 3 days, treatment should be discontinued and the case reevaluated by a veterinarian.

Urinary tract infections may require administration for 10 to 14 days or longer as directed by the veterinarian. The maximum duration of treatment should not exceed 30 days.

Follow the prescription label exactly and veterinarian directions.

Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

Do not use in animals with a history of an allergic reaction to penicillins or cephalosporins.

Possible Side Effects

• Allergic or hypersensitivity reactions may occur in susceptible animals

If an allergic reaction or other unexpected response occurs, discontinue use and contact your veterinarian.

Precautions

Safety for use in pregnant or breeding animals has not been determined.

People with known hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins should avoid direct contact with this medication.

Antibacterial medications should be used only for proven or strongly suspected bacterial infections as directed by a veterinarian.

Storage

Store the dry powder at room temperature in a dry place. After reconstitution, refrigerate the suspension and discard any unused portion after 10 days. Keep the bottle securely closed and out of reach of children and animals.

Disposal

Dispose of any unused reconstituted Clavamox® Drops after 10 days. Dispose of expired or unused medication through a medication take-back program when available or according to applicable local medication disposal requirements. Keep discarded medication and packaging securely inaccessible to children and animals.
