Description

NeoMed® 325 is a prescription veterinary antibiotic containing neomycin sulfate, a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antimicrobial used for the treatment and control of bacterial enteritis (colibacillosis) caused by susceptible strains of Escherichia coli. The water-soluble powder is designed for administration through drinking water, allowing convenient treatment of individual animals, groups, herds, or flocks.

NeoMed 325 is approved for use in cattle (excluding veal calves), swine, sheep, goats, and turkeys. The soluble powder formulation mixes readily with drinking water and is commonly utilized when bacterial enteric infections affect multiple animals simultaneously.

Because neomycin remains primarily within the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration, it provides localized antibacterial activity within the digestive system where susceptible bacteria may be present. NeoMed 325 should be used only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian.

How It Works

NeoMed 325 contains neomycin sulfate, an aminoglycoside antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis in susceptible organisms. Following oral administration, neomycin is minimally absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, allowing antibacterial activity to remain concentrated within the digestive system. Indications

NeoMed® 325 is indicated for

Cattle (excluding veal calves):

• Treatment and control of colibacillosis (bacterial enteritis) caused by susceptible Escherichia coli

Swine:

• Treatment and control of colibacillosis (bacterial enteritis) caused by susceptible Escherichia coli

Sheep:

• Treatment and control of colibacillosis (bacterial enteritis) caused by susceptible Escherichia coli

Goats:

• Treatment and control of colibacillosis (bacterial enteritis) caused by susceptible Escherichia coli

Turkeys:

• Control of mortality associated with susceptible Escherichia coli infections

Use should be based on veterinary diagnosis and susceptibility considerations whenever possible.

Directions

Use only as directed by your veterinarian.

General Administration:
Administer through drinking water.
Prepare fresh medicated water daily.
Use medicated water as the sole source of drinking water during treatment.
Adjust water medication concentration based on animal weight, age, environmental conditions, and expected water consumption.

Individual Animal Treatment:
To provide 10 mg neomycin sulfate per pound of body weight:

• Mix 1 level teaspoon in water or milk for each 160 pounds of body weight.
• Administer daily in divided doses or through drinking water.

Herd/Flock Treatment:
Estimate total body weight of animals being treated and administer according to label directions.

Treatment duration should not exceed:

• Cattle, Swine, Sheep, Goats: Maximum 14 days
• Turkeys: 5 days

• Administer in divided doses
• Maximum treatment duration: 14 days

Turkeys

• 10 mg neomycin sulfate per pound of body weight daily
• Administer for 5 days

Possible Side Effects

Adverse reactions are uncommon when used according to label directions.

Because oral neomycin is poorly absorbed, systemic drug levels are generally not achieved.
