Description

Clindamycin Hydrochloride Capsules, USP are a prescription veterinary antibiotic for oral use in dogs. Each capsule contains clindamycin hydrochloride equivalent to the labeled amount of clindamycin.

Clindamycin is prescribed by veterinarians for specific bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. Labeled indications in dogs include certain skin infections, infected wounds and abscesses, dental infections, and osteomyelitis.

How It Works

Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit. This action helps inhibit the growth of susceptible bacteria.

Indications

For use in dogs only.

Clindamycin Hydrochloride Capsules are indicated for specific infections caused by susceptible strains of designated microorganisms, including:

• Skin infections, including wounds and abscesses
• Deep wounds and abscesses
• Dental infections
• Osteomyelitis

Use only as prescribed by a licensed veterinarian.

Ingredients

Active Ingredients:

• 25 mg Capsule: Clindamycin hydrochloride equivalent to 25 mg clindamycin
• 75 mg Capsule: Clindamycin hydrochloride equivalent to 75 mg clindamycin
• 150 mg Capsule: Clindamycin hydrochloride equivalent to 150 mg clindamycin
• 300 mg Capsule: Clindamycin hydrochloride equivalent to 300 mg clindamycin

Directions

Administer orally as prescribed by your veterinarian.

Infected Wounds, Abscesses, and Dental Infections:

The labeled dosage is 2.5 to 15 mg/lb of body weight every 12 hours.

Treatment may be continued for up to 28 days if clinically indicated. Treatment of acute infections should not be continued for more than 3 to 4 days if no clinical response is observed. Contact your veterinarian for reevaluation if your dog does not respond as expected.

Osteomyelitis:

The labeled dosage is 5 to 15 mg/lb of body weight every 12 hours.

Treatment is recommended for a minimum of 28 days. If no response to therapy is observed, treatment should not be continued beyond 28 days without veterinarian reevaluation.

The exact dose and duration of therapy should be determined by your veterinarian.

Cautions

Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

Because of the potential for adverse gastrointestinal effects, do not administer to rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, horses, chinchillas, or ruminating animals.

Possible Side Effects

Contact your veterinarian if side effects are persistent, severe, or if you notice another unexpected reaction while your dog is receiving this medication.

Precautions

During prolonged therapy of one month or longer, periodic liver and kidney function tests and blood counts should be performed as directed by the veterinarian.

Use with caution in animals with very severe kidney or liver disease accompanied by severe metabolic abnormalities.

Clindamycin has neuromuscular blocking properties and should be used with caution in animals receiving other neuromuscular blocking agents.

Use of clindamycin may occasionally result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms.

Safety in pregnant dogs or breeding male dogs has not been established.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature, 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Keep medication securely closed and stored out of reach of children and animals.

Disposal

Dispose of unused or expired Clindamycin Hydrochloride Capsules through a medication take-back program when available or according to applicable local medication disposal requirements. Keep discarded medication and packaging securely inaccessible to children and animals.
