Description

Amoxicillin Tablets are a prescription, broad-spectrum antibiotic for dogs and cats. Amoxicillin is a semisynthetic penicillin antibiotic with bactericidal activity against a range of susceptible Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Veterinarians may prescribe Amoxicillin Tablets for certain bacterial infections involving the respiratory tract, genitourinary tract, gastrointestinal tract, skin, and soft tissues.

Amoxicillin is effective only against susceptible bacterial infections. Appropriate culture and susceptibility testing may be recommended to help determine whether amoxicillin is an appropriate treatment.

How It Works

Amoxicillin is a semisynthetic penicillin-class antibiotic.

It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Susceptible bacteria require properly formed cell walls for survival. By interfering with this process, amoxicillin weakens the bacterial cell wall and produces a bactericidal effect.

Amoxicillin is stable in the presence of gastric acid and is rapidly absorbed following oral administration.

Indications

Dogs:
Amoxicillin may be prescribed for susceptible bacterial infections including:

• Respiratory tract infections, including tonsillitis and tracheobronchitis / Genitourinary tract infections, including cystitis / Gastrointestinal tract infections, including bacterial gastroenteritis / Bacterial dermatitis / Soft tissue infections, including abscesses, lacerations, and wounds

Cats:
Amoxicillin may be prescribed for susceptible bacterial infections including:

• Upper respiratory tract infections / Genitourinary tract infections, including cystitis / Gastrointestinal tract infections / Skin and soft tissue infections, including abscesses, lacerations, and wounds

Appropriate culture and susceptibility testing should be considered when indicated.

Ingredients

Active Ingredients:
Amoxicillin as Amoxicillin Trihydrate

Inactive Ingredients:

Directions

Give exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian.
Administer orally according to the directions provided on your pet's prescription label.
Amoxicillin Tablets may be given with or without food. If gastrointestinal upset occurs, administering the medication with food may help.
Give doses at approximately the same times each day as directed.
Continue treatment for the full duration prescribed by your veterinarian, even if your pet appears to be feeling better.
If your pet's condition does not improve or worsens during treatment, contact your veterinarian.
Do not skip doses, change the prescribed dose, or discontinue treatment without consulting your veterinarian.

Missed Dose:
If a dose is missed, give it when remembered unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose.
If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule.
Do not give two doses at the same time unless specifically directed by your veterinarian.

Dogs:
The labeled recommended dosage is 5 mg per lb of body weight twice daily.

Cats:
The labeled recommended dosage is 50 mg per animal once daily, approximately 5 to 10 mg per lb.

Treatment is generally continued for 5 to 7 days or for 48 hours after symptoms have subsided.
If no improvement is seen within 5 days, the diagnosis and treatment should be reevaluated by a veterinarian.
Always follow the dosage and duration provided on your pet's prescription label.

Cautions

Precautions

Do not administer to animals with a known penicillin allergy
Complete the full course of treatment prescribed by your veterinarian
Do not discontinue treatment simply because symptoms have improved
Do not use leftover antibiotics for another animal or a different illness
Tell your veterinarian about all medications and supplements your pet receives
Use cautiously in animals with significant kidney impairment

Storage

Do not store at temperatures above 77°F (25°C). Keep the bottle tightly closed.
Store in a dry location protected from excessive heat and moisture. Keep securely out of reach of children and animals.

Disposal
Dispose of unused or expired medication through an appropriate medication take-back program when available.
If a take-back program is unavailable, follow disposal recommendations provided by your veterinarian, pharmacist, or local authorities. Do not use medication beyond its expiration date.
