Pain Management in Dogs and Cats

As a pet parent, one of the most disheartening experiences is noticing that your pet is in pain, and not knowing how to help them.  Although not always the case, pain can have a protective role for your pet, as it often acts as a warning sign for actual or potential tissue damage. Regardless of the cause, your pet deserves proper pain management to help them live their best quality of life!

Types of Pain
Acute Pain: Normal, predictable, noticeable. It is often described as sharp, throbbing, aching or burning.
Chronic Pain: This pain persists for longer than the expected time frame for healing. Osteoarthritis Pain.
Cancer Pain: Any pain associated with Cancer such as tumor growth, spreading of cancerous disease, or toxic effects of chemotherapy or radiation.
Neuropathic Pain: Pain resulting from damage to a nerve or nervous system. Often not diagnosed because animals can’t communicate the problem.

Common Symptoms of Pain
Physical:
  • Change in heart rate
  • Heavy breathing
  • Enlarged pupils
  • Slowed reflexes

Behavioral:
  • Reduced appetite
  • Reluctance to lie down
  • Unusual restlessness or anxiety
  • Withdrawn behavior
  • Mood changes
  • Licking, biting or rubbing site of pain
  • Irritability
