“First of all let me say that this is very rare and there is no need to panic,” says Dr. Biehl with Heartland Veterinary Services. “ I have only seen 4 cases of it in 30 years of practice.”
Equine Herpesvirus What is EHM?
Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) is another name for the neurologic disease associated with equine herpesvirus (EHV) infections. Neurological signs appear as a result of damage to blood vessels in the brain and spinal cord associated with EHV infection. Interference with the blood supply leads to tissue damage and a subsequent loss in normal function of areas in the brain and spinal cord.
What are the equine herpesviruses?
To date, nine EHVs have been identified worldwide.
- EHV-1: Can cause four manifestations of disease in horses, including a neurological form, respiratory disease, abortion, and neonatal death. EHM is most often due to mutant or neuropathogenic strains of EHV-1, so called because of a particular mutation in the genome.
- EHV-4: Causes a nonfatal upper respiratory tract disease in foals and is uncommonly associated with abortion and rarely with neurologic disease.
Horses of any age that are carriers of EHV-1 do not show any external signs of disease when the virus is in a latent form. The virus can be reactivated during times of stress, such as strenuous exercise, long-distance transport, or at weaning.
Vaccines that may provide additional protection are:

Resveratrol does not affect the body’s production of gastroprotective prostaglandins and does not have unwanted gastrointestinal side effects. Rather than inhibiting inflammatory enzymes circulating in the body, resveratrol reduces gene expression of inflammatory mediators, such as COX-2, lipoxygenases, myeloperoxidases, nitrous oxide synthases and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα). The result is that lower concentrations of inflammatory enzymes are circulating in the body.
*****UK's Gluck Equine Research Center recently completed clinical studies that document the anti-inflammatory activity of resveratrol in horses who were given product, Equithrive Joint. Within 14 days of starting treatment, the horses had significant reductions of inflammatory mediators,

Adequan single dose is temporarily on Hold with Manufacturer Luitipold. The Canine product Adequan for Dogs is basically the same only has a slightly different preservative but is just like the multi-dose Adequan for horse. The 5ml vial for Canines has the same amount of ingredients as the 5ml vial of Adequan for horses and could be given IM to horses. There are also products that can be substituted for Adequan, for example, Chondroprotec or Ichon but they have not been researched nearly as much and may not prove to get the same results.
