While it’s been known for some time that zinc works well to fight bacterial infections, it has been unclear why that is. Using new visualizing techniques researchers in Australia were able to see, on an atomic level, how zinc was binding proteins in bacteria. The bacteria used were Streptococcus pneumonia which causes respiratory infections that can include life threatening pneumonia and meningitis. Zinc starves the bacteria of essential nutrients making it easier for our bodies to kill. It makes sense that feeding supplements with Zinc should also help our furry little pets.
